| Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is located on the coast and bounded by the Collserola ridge and rivers Besós and Llobregat. The city is less than 150 kilometres fromthe Pyrenees. Barcelona's location on the shores of the Mediterranean means that it enjoys a warm, welcoming climate and pleasant temperatures all year round. Rainfall is sometimes heavy, helping to maintain the many green areas around the city. |

| Montserrat |
| The mountain called Montserrat is the setting for the pilgrimage shrine and basilica housing the image of St. Mary, a monastery, and service buildings for visitors. The large plaza carved out of the mountain is comprised of three stepped squares. The three upper balconies have sculptures by Joan Rebull, the central sculpture representing the proclamation of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. |

| Collserola Tower |
The Collserola Tower is the telecommunications tower built on the Collserola mountain range, on the Vilana hill, for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. It was designed by the English architect Norman Foste, after their project had won a restricted competition organised by the Barcelona City Council in 1988. The bold structural conception required ingenuity and cutting-edge engineering.

| Barcelona Zoo |
| Barcelona Zoo is set in a magnificent garden over 100 years old, covering 13 hectares of Ciutadella Park and containing a collection of some 7,500 individual animals belonging to more than 400 species from all over the world. There is a large collection of primates, all in danger of extinction, with Snowflake the gorilla as star attraction. He is the only albino gorilla known to exist. |

| Barrio de los Molinos |
| It is a city of renowned architectural interest, from its Roman walls to the new urban planning schemes of the eighties. Over the next five years the city will step up its range of cultural facilities with pioneering initiatives which are open to all and invite participation. Each year will be dedicated to a particular theme in a programme which will culminate in 2004 with the Universal Forum of Cultures. |
