Vilanova i la Geltrú is made up of two ancient townships, La Geltrú, which appeared in documents dated before the year 1000, and Vila Nova, which as a town was born just outside the Geltru in the year 1274. For many centuries this relation with the sea gave life to the town. Between the 18th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the beach of the town was a cosmopolitan port, where the main families in the town carried out their business with ports from all around Europe, America and the Philippines. This trade allowed the people of Vilanova to discover cultures other than their own.
Nowadays the economy of the town is sustained by the service industry and a still substantial industrial sector. The agricultural economy is however diminishing, although you can still find small farm holdings where a variety of vegetables are cultivated and grapes are grown. There is also a small yet dynamic fishing industry in the town. The port here in Vilanova is the second most important in Catalonia regarding catch volume.
