The Balearic Islands University history is short ? since 1978 ? but can be considered long as far as its precedents are concerned. If we take a look at its historic background, four great stages can be established: the Escoles Lul.lianes in the XV century, under private patronage; the Estudi General Lul.lià, created by Ferran el Catòlic in 1483; the Universitat Literària, from 1698 to 1829; and the relaunching of the Estudi General from 1951 which finally, in 1978, became the Universitat de les Illes Balears.
