Sailing has always been intimately linked to the history of Torrevieja, as this town still exported salt to Cuba from its local salt flats using sailing boats in the early 20th century, which then returned home full of sugar cane for local use. The yacht club, in addition to a range of port services, has magnificent installations with a social building, restaurant and swimming pool, plus a light sailboat school.
Two enormous salt lakes covering more than 2,000 hectares are the characteristic trait of this tourist area. From north to south the coastline begins with the popular Mata beach with its fine sand and full range of facilities. Cervera cape is linked to Salaret point by a series of small, rocky coves, particularly those of El Mojón and Zorras followed by two of the most popular and lively beaches: Locos and Cura, both with fine sand, calm waters, a full range of facilities plus the constantly bustling promenade. The port houses the yacht club and a modern marina - where two diving centres, a sailing school and two charter companies operate - together with a small beach between the marina and the salt wharf. The southern end of the coast is marked by Náufragos beach. The sport alternatives in this area are completed by a golfing paradise of Club de Golf Altoreal, La Manga Club, Club de Golf Las Ramblas de Orihuela, Club de Golf Torrepacheco and the ever popular Campo de Golf Villamartin.
