Historically, Spain has had a very strong reputation for its red wines but less so for its whites. However, significant efforts both in the vineyards and in the bodegas are now producing exciting and unique white wines that are establishing a global reputation.
One of Spains major advantages is the number of different grape varieties particularly suited to its regional climates and soils. So for example in Galicia, in the north-west of Spain, with its more temperate climate, a number of excellent wines are being made. Grape varieties to look out for from this area are albarino, godello and treixadura. Although the names of the grapes may be unfamiliar the wines will both surprise and delight.
As indeed will the wines of the Rueda region near to Madrid. Wines here are made principally from the verdejo and sauvignon blanc grapes and produce wines of an outstanding price/quality ratio. Due to the warmer climate the sauvignon blanc tends to produce wines of greater aromas than those from cooler climates while still retaining a pleasing acidity and dryness. The verdejo grape produces wines of a very high quality which rate amongst Spains greatest white wines. Its particular characteristic is an agreeable touch of bitterness in the mouth. This is a wine well worth trying and you will love it or hate it!
The most widely grown grapes in Spain are airen and macabeo (viura) which produce wines that are of everyday quality but lack interest and, since life is short, time would be better spent trying wines of better quality for little extra money.
