Situated just 30 minutes south of Barcelona on Spain?s Costa Dorada, the former fishing village of Sitges is one of the holiday hotspots for the discerning gay traveller.
Attracting the gay community by its thousands, this ever-popular resort has built a reputation for being one of the most tolerant and one of the most lively summer destinations in Europe. After serving as a medieval fortress, it first came to prominence as a holiday destination for the wealthy residents of Barcelona who came to experience the benefits of the sea air and water. But it was its connection with some of Spain?s finest artists that drew it to the attention of the rest of the world.
The 19th Century modernisme movement largely began in the town and long after its decline, Sitges was still attracting such luminaries as Dali, Picasso and Miro. But one artist, Santiago Rusiñol, more than any other, helped to cement Sitges as a resort of artistic and cultural integrity.
His work can be seen today in the museum that he bequeathed to his beloved town, the Museu Cau Ferrat.
Sitges has a great range of shops situated throughout the town's picturesque street network. Here you can find everything from antiques, local handicrafts and souvenirs to clothing, shoes, accessories and jewellery such as diamond eternity rings and diamond wedding rings.
