(Murcia) Shoreless Lake School (SLS) at Murcia was founded in 1997 as the Spanish branch of Shoreless Lake School of New Jersey, a school established in 1991 by the Reverend Alfonso Gálvez, president of the Society of Jesus Christ the Priest. SLS is a private, non-profit American-style international school for boys, offering a Catholic education from second through twelfth grades. The main campus, a new purpose-built facility, is located amid the citrus groves surrounding Totana on a property called ?La Isla.? SLS also has a Student Activity Center located on a property called ?El Pedregal,? in Mazarrón, Murcia.
Only a few yards from the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, the Student Center ?home to the boys on weekends and vacations? includes students? sleeping quarters, recreation areas, the main library, a study center, a a chapel, playing fields, and scenic grounds where students commune with nature.
Although it is not affiliated with any diocese, SLS is a Catholic school. The Spanish Ministry of Education has approved SLS to operate as a grades two through twelve ?American school for Spanish and foreign students.? The school is listed in the educational sections of the American Embassy in Madrid and is a member of the Mediterranean Association of International Schools (MAIS). In 2000, the Spanish government recognized the organization Mar Sin Orillas as an official, legal, non-profit organization, separate from the Society of Jesus Christ the Priest, to oversee the school's financial operations. The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) has accredited SLS as a ?unique school offering quality education to students.?
Academically, SLS offers a college preparatory education. Students follow an American curriculum, and graduates are qualified to attend an American or European University. All students take AP, PSAT, SAT I and SAT II tests. Students applying to a Spanish university take the Selectividad, the general entrance examination for Spanish universities. Students also sit for a Graduation Rubric Examination to assure that there are no ?gaps? in their education.
The academic program at SLS is designed to present students with a rigorous, integral, and total education based in Catholic values and tradition as well as to provide students with an intellectual and scientific formation of the highest caliber designed to prepare students for university study. The program for grades two through twelve focuses on the following major areas of endeavor: Modern Languages (English and Spanish); Classics; Mathematics; Natural Sciences; Philosophy (and Catholic Theology); History of Art and Fine Arts; Social Studies; Technology; and Physical Education.
