Seville University is a `Public Law' institution, endowed with legal capacity, which carries out its functions, in accordance with the current legislation, autonomously, and to which corresponds the responsibility of providing, as a public service, higher education, through study, teaching and research. It is an institution which serves society and is inspired by the constitutional principals of equality, liberty, justice and pluralism. The university of Seville is dedicated to intellectual and material development of the people, the defence of the environment and of peace. To realise this it must carry out the following functions:
Creation, development, transmission and criticism of the sciences, the technical sciences and culture. Preparation for the realisation of professional activities and artistic creation. Scientific and technical support for cultural, social and economic development, with special attention to the Andalusian Autonomous Community. The university is organised, according to its 1998 Statutes, so that its governing body makes sure of the representation of all sectors of the university community: Professors, students and administrative and service personnel.
The basic units for teaching and research are:
The Departments that organise and develop the research and teaching appropriate to their fields of knowledge. Their collegiate body is the Department Council, with representation of all the sectors that play a role in its functions, and which chooses the director and the different committees. The Faculties, Technical Sciences Schools and University Schools, which are the centres in charge of the ordering of the teaching and academic activity and administrative management, coordinating the work of the departments, according to the study plans established for the acquiring of academic titles. Its collegiate governing body is the Centre Council, with representation of all sectors, which elects the Dean or Director and the governing team.
The University of Seville is a public institution dedicated to higher education, with its main buildings in the city of Seville, in the autonomous community of Andalusia (Spain). Although its centres are distributed throughout the city, the headquarters of its Rectorate is in the `Real Fábrica de Tabacos' building.
