It was founded by the Phoenicians and during the Roman domination was known as Turania which currently is called Torrequebrada de los Bajos. Numerous archeological remains have been located in this area. The Roman town was moved to its current location after a flood destroyed the old site. Salt mining began during the Muslim era.
