Jerez de la Frontera is famous for two things, Sherry (sweet wine) and Horses. The name Jerez de la Frontera stems back to when this Andalucian town was a frontier town that divided the Moors and the Christians.
Right down in the south west corner of Spain and in the Andalucia Region, Jerez is set within some stunning scenery with large vineyards producing fine sweet grapes that have been giving their high sugar content by the exceptionally strong sun that this area is blessed with.
Sandeman, Domecq and John Harvey are household names in the UK thanks to their production of Sherry and these famous companies can still be found trading in the town.
Horses are another passion of the people of Jerez and no trip here would be complete without a trip to a dressage horse show. The best place to experience this spectacle is on a Thursday morning at The Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art. (Real Escuela Andaluza de Arte Equestre) you can call them on 0034 956 311111.
To get to Jerez you need to fly direct with Ryanair from Stansted to Jerez Airport or fly into Seville or Malaga. Malaga Airport is around 2-2½ drive away but there are a huge number of flights from all over Europe landing their on a daily basis.
The City of Seville and the Coastline of the Costa de La Luz can also be reached in under an hour and both a worth a visit if you are staying here longer than a couple of days.
It goes without saying that the best way to explore this rich and varied countryside is by having your own vehicle.
