 The City of Girona (Gerona) is situated in the north eastern corner of Spain. Only a few kilometers from the bustling resorts of the Costa Brava.
Full of ancient buildings which include the remains of some ancient Arab baths and a 15th C Cathedral and a fascinating ?Old Jewish Quarter? which is full of winding, narrow, cobbled streets. You could also visit the Salvador Dali Museum that can be found here.
Previously not on the ?long weekend? map for many UK and European travelers Girona?s tourist industry has been transformed by Ryanair who have made Girona Airport one of the main European Hubs.
Ryanair fly to 23 different destinations throughout Europe and although many people use the Airport as a cheap way of getting to Barcelona the remaining visitors either spend a few days in Girona itself or head of the 30kms or so to any of the many tourist resort areas of the Costa Brava.
Most of Girona?s attractions can be found and seen within a couple of days so if you are planning on staying a little longer or would like to get out and explore the Catalan countryside then its best to rent a car.
Within easy driving distance of Girona are the Costa Brava towns of Lloret de Mar, Estartit and Roses. Lloret is only 30 kms away.
You can also drive through the mountains and head up into the small country of Andorra. This is quite a long journey of about 22kms but the views and scenery are amazing.
Staying in Girona also gives you a chance to pop into France. The French border can be reached in under an hour and the closest French City is Perpignan.
