Gran Canaria enjoys the distinction of housing the oldest golf club in Spain. It was inaugurated on 17th December 1891 on a site known as 'Lomo del Polvo'. In 1956 it was transferred to the plains of Bandama, situated close to an extinct volcano with a diameter of 800m and a depth of 200 m.
This is a testimony to the volcanic origins of Gran Canaria some 14 million years ago. The course has wonderful views of spectacular, deep ravines. Designed by Mackenzie Ross, it is a par 71, 18-hole course, with 2 putting greens, one of which is floodlit, a practice tee, pitching green, instructors, pro-shop, club hire service, a restaurant and an excellent wine cellar. There are also two tennis courts, a horse-riding area and a swimming pool.
For those who prefer accommodation close to the course itself, there is a golf hotel. The heart of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, founded in 1478, is just a few kilometres away. It has become a modern, cosmopolitan metropolis with a wide range of cultural and leisure activities as well as boasting one of the island's best beaches, namely Las Canteras.
