The University of Murcia was built in 1272, during the reign of Alfonso X, El Sabio. However the university had a tumultuous start and disappeared shortly after its creation. The University of Murcia of today was founded in 1915 and integrated into the Colegio de La Merced which has been transformed into the Law Faculty. There are approximately 34,000 students studying at the University and this number has been increasing due to the popularity of the University´s location and the amount of courses on offer. There are nearly 1700 professors, and close to 800 administrative and service employees. Another incentive for prospective students is the modernisation that is being carried out on the univeristy to bring it up to the present day. These new buildings are equiped with new facilities putting this university at the centre of new technology.

Murcia University has a School of Sports Medicine, a Service of Support of Experimental Sciences, and an Office of Results of Research, as well as many other specialized institutes dealing with different aspects of the scientific and humanistic world.  With modern facilities, the University of Murcia offers more than 19 sports clubs in which all types of sports are represented.  The University is strong in law, education, economics, chemistry, medicine, and Spanish and English philology, among others.

The main Campus is situated in Espinardo which houses the majority of students.The University of Murcia is a centre of constant growth and its extensive faculties have been extended to be able to offer students one of the highest levels of education in Spain and this has been greatly noticed as the number of students who attend the university has risen from 8,000 to more than 30,000.
