The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) is located on the island of Gran Canaria, the most populated of the Canary Islands, with about 750,000 inhabitants, 450,000 of which live in the capital city, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Although some of the constituent colleges and faculties date back to the early seventies, the current organisation and structure of the ULPGC was established in 1989. Nowadays it offers to more than 20,000 Spanish and foreign students a wide number of studies, from Literature, History or Arts, to Computing, Architecture, Engineering or Economics.

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was created during the period 89-90 after a great social movement that took place in the Gran Canaria islands.The parliament of Canarias acknowledged its foundation with the Reorganisation Law of 26th of April.

The law created the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with a rectorate in Gran Canaria. The university also merged with the Polytechnic Universityof Canarias and the different universty centers were redistributed in the whole archipelago.

The university is now an assembly of 19 centers, some of this centers where created at the beginning of this century , other are even older. Despite of its youth, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has a certain knowledge and experience.

The university is situated on different campuses:
The Campus of Tafira, the biggest one, it is situated at about 10 Km of the center of the town in the middle of a beautiful and green landscape. In the center of the capital, you have the campus of Obelisco, where you can study courses related to The Humanities, Social Education and Teaching. The Campus of San Cristóbal is situated in the south part of the town, there you can study biomedecine. The Campus of Montaña Cardones is situated at 8 Km of the north part of town, nearby the historical village of Arucas. There, you can study Veterinary, Sciences and Alimentary Technologies.
