Medical Insurance in Spain is something that you need to consider if you are moving here or intend to spend a large part of the year here.
I believe that it is foolish to rely on the E111 form if you are staying in Spain for any length of time!
There are a few differences with Spanish Medical Insurance when you compare it to what you get in the UK.
For example in the UK you have to go along to a GP and get a referral before your Private Medical Insurance kicks in.
In Spain when you take out Medical Insurance you are provided with a book of pre-approved Doctors and Therapists who will happily see you at anytime and without any form of referral.
The larger private Medical Insurance Companies in Spain normally have there own Private Medical Centers where you can go along without an appointment and see a GP. We have been along to our local private Medical Center and have never waited more than 20 minutes to see someone.
Probably the largest and best known Spanish Medical Insurance Company is Sanitas. Sanitas are the Spanish arm of Bupa and many of their policies and terms will be similar to those of its UK sister. Sanitas also have a large network of Private, Spanish Hospitals.
The larger companies normally offer some kind of Spanish Dental Insurance as well.
If you are heading for the Costa del Sol then it is also worth checking out Helicopterios Sanitiras. They are a kind of specialist private health care provider with there own team of Paramedics for home or accident emergencies as well as a center where you can go along and see a GP.
