Private Health Insurance in Spain is dominated by just a handful of companies. Sanitas and Asisa being two of the largest.
If you are from the UK then Sanitas will be the one that is most familiar as it is the Spanish arm of Bupa.
We have lived in Spain and had a baby whilst living here and the advice within this article are solely based on our experiences!

Whether you take out private health insurance if you are living or moving to Spain really depends on a number of factors:
Firstly, both the private and state medical systems here in Spain differ from those in the UK.
Whether you will be employed or working in Spain is a large part of the process. If you are going to work and pay taxes and National Insurance then you will eligible for the State Health Care system which is pretty good.
If you are over 60 or retired check out the UK Governments website regarding health care in a foreign Country.
If you do not intend to work in Spain and are not over 60 but intend to spend a large proportion of your life here then Spanish Private Medical Insurance is a must.
The State health system in Spain is set up in much the same way as in the UK. You must find your Local Centro de Salud (Health Center) and register as a patient. If you have any form of illness you must make an appointment or follow the procedures for emergency treatment.
If you have an emergency situation you can always go along to the A & E department at your nearest hospital.
The biggest difference with Private health care in Spain is that you do not need a referral from your GP in order to see a Doctor through your private health care Insurance.
Most of the companies also offer some form of dental insurance in Spain as part of the deal.
