Car Insurance in Spain is of course compulsory and the Police in Spain do regular spot checks to make sure that you paperwork is in order.

There are a large number of Spanish Car Insurance companies to choose from with larger companies such as Mapfre having an office in most towns.

The following article is based on our experiences of car insurance in Spain and you need to check the facts for yourselves before taking on any policies.

When we moved here it was from the UK and we were not fluent in Spanish so it was important for us to deal with a car insurance company in Spain that spoke English. This led us to Linea Directa. (Direct Line in the UK).

Apart from the fact that we found insuring a car in Spain far cheaper than in London the other big difference is that it is the car that is insured not the driver. Although you have to disclose the main drivers on the policy the car is insured to be driven by anyone over 25 on a fully comprehensive basis, providing you have fully comprehensive insurance!

Due to new changes in Spain you are no longer able to insure UK registered cars in Spain and will have to change the registration of the car to Spanish plates if you intend to keep the car here for any length of time.
