
Girona University was established in 1991 in accordance with the Establishment Act approved by the Parliament of Catalonia on the basis of the initiative begun in 1968 which was manifested in the establishment of technical, science, humanities and social sciences studies.
The UdG has seven teaching centres: the Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences, Faculty of Education Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Arts, Advanced Polytechnic School and University School of Nursing.
The University also has six centres assigned to it: the Official Catalan School of Tourism, CETA University School of Tourism, ESMA University School of Tourism, Euroaula University School of Tourism, Mediterranean University School of Tourism and Sant Pol de Mar University School of Tourism, as well as being linked to a further centre: Girona Advanced School of Public Relations.
In these centres, courses are taught leading to 38 different qualifications (degrees, engineering degrees, diplomas, advanced degrees, and degrees in architecture and technical engineering).
These departments and research institutes are the sections of the University which run research programmes and organise the content of the courses in each field of knowledge, while at the same time as imparting doctorate studies. The UdG is presently comprised of the following departments: Architecture and Construction Engineering; Biology; Environmental Sciences; Science Teaching, Letters, Arts and Physical Education; Private Law; Public Law; Economics; Electronics, Computer Sciences and Automatics; Business; Industrial Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Agriculture and Food Technology; Philology and Philosophy; Physics; Geography; History and History of Art; Nursing; Applied Mathematics and Computer Sciences; Teaching; Psychology; and Chemistry.
The other centres and institutes pertaining to the UdG are: the Institute of Education Sciences; Institute of Aquatic Ecology; Institute of Computer Sciences and Applications; Institute of Catalan Language and Culture; Institute of the Environment; Institute of Cultural Heritage; Institute of Computational Chemistry; Institute of Research on the Quality of Life; Institute of Agricultural-Alimentary Technology; Chair of Contemporary Art and Culture; Ferrater Mora Chair of Contemporary Thinking; Chair of Geography and Territorial Thinking; Chair of Maritim Studies; and the Lluís Santaló Chair of Applied Mathematics. Also worthy of mention are the European Documentation Centre; and the Centre for Documentation and Study of European and Mediterranean Languages.
The following services, widh are offered to the university community in general, are also to be found at the UdG: Library Services , Office of Research and Technology Transfer(OITT), Scientific and Technological Calculus Service, Sports Service, Service of Academic Management and Students' affairs, Computer Sciences Service, Modern Languages Service, Publications Services, Geographical and Remote Sensing Information systems, and General Research Laboratories (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Microscope).
The Occupational Promotion Office is responsible for putting students in touch with the labour market, and the Office of Technological Innovation and Transfer forms a bridge between the University and the business world, aimed at channelling the research potential of UdG and applying it within the society.
At present, the precise characteristics of the Scientific and Technological Park are in the final stages of being defined. Likewise, the UdG Ombudsman is the figure which the statutes require to ensure the defence of the rights of the entire university community. In accordance with the statutes, via the Delegation of Co-operative Affairs for Development, the UdG actively participates in the social and cultural progress of developing countries.
The students of the UdG (more than 13,500 in the academic year 2000-1) are organised through their representative body, the Students? Council.
The centres of the University of Girona are in three places in the city: Barri Vell (the Historic Centre), the Montilivi Campus and in the centre of Girona. Most of the facilities are located on the Montilivi Campus, where two further centres, belonging to the Advanced Polytechnic School are to be built, a Library, a sports campus, a building containing workshops and a greenhouse, a building for services. The campus in Barri Vell houses a library, also presently in the process of being expanded, and the Faculty of Arts. It is intended that all Educational studies will be brought together in the Seminary building and the site of the convent and church of Sant Domènec is to be restored gradually. The Centre de Formació Contínua [Ongoing Training Centre], Nursing studies and part of Educational studies are located in the centre of Girona.
The main objective of the "Universitat de Girona: Innovació i Formació" Foundation [Girona University Innovation and Training Foundation] is to respond to the training needs, at an advanced level, of both individuals and organisations which, in a developed society such as ours, are constantly growing. In addition to this foundation, the University of Girona also houses the Private Foundation: Girona, Universitat i Futur [Girona, University and Future] and the Agricultural-Alimentary Campus of Girona.
