Flights are connected to Heathrow, Gatwick, Stanstead and Manchester and also to Morocco at Tangiers, Casablanca and Marakesh.
During World War II, Gibraltar's value as a base was greatly increased by the construction of the airfield. Originally it was just an emergency landing base for the Navy, built in 1939 on the old race course at North Front. In order to handle larger aircraft, the runway was extended onto reclaimed ground, extending out into the bay. It is still run by the RAF but it used by several airlines serving Gibraltar. The road to Spain runs directly through the middle of the runway and has to be closed when aircraft land and take-off.
The airport is small by comparison to most but has a shop and an information centre. Taxis can be found directly outside the terminal building, as can the bus stop for buses to the city centre. The airport is next to the border with Spain, just a short walk away. There is a car park opposite the terminal building for long and short term. If you are entering Spain and require a taxi, you need to walk over the border and take a Spanish taxi as Gibraltar taxis are not allowed to enter Spain.
