Critical -- Will Impact Travel
UPDATE: Investigation continues in March 11 train bombings in Madrid, Spain. Expect disruptions and increased security measures countrywide.
Locations affected by this alert: Spain, Madrid
UPDATE to March 11 alert; new intelligence in [brackets]:
[At least 198 people were killed and 1,600 were injured during ten near-simultaneous bombings on three suburban trains and the Atocha, El Pozo and Santa Eugenia railway stations in Madrid, Spain early March 11. Police discovered and diffused at least two other bombs they suspect were meant to target emergency crews responding to the scene. Expect increased security; police have been on high alert for violence by ETA as the March 14 elections approach. Expect transportation delays.]
[The Basque separatist party leader, Arnaldo Otegi, denied the ETA was responsible for the attack, citing the ETA's habit of issuing a warning before any previous bombing attempt. Otegi also suggested such a massive attack would not have been in ETA's political interests. If the ETA did conduct this bombing, it dwarfs its previous largest one in 1987 when it killed 21 people in the bombing of a supermarket in Barcelona. Mostly it has targeted political leaders and security personnel.]
[Spanish authorities initially blamed the Basque separatist group ETA, but later questioned whether Al-Qaeda could have been involved. An email to the London-based Arabic newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi stated the Al-Qaeda affiliated Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades was responsible. This group has a tendency to take credit for many unclaimed attacks worldwide. It is uncertain who is responsible for the attack.]
Atocha is a huge complex with a subway station and both commuter and long-distance trains. All three stations are on the Number Two Cercanias commuter rail line, serving eastern and southeastern Madrid. A map (in Spanish) of where the three trains exploded can be found at

The Spanish government has provided emergency phone numbers for relatives who need more information about the bombings:
34-900-200-222;
34-915-767-000.
Maintain an increased state of awareness. If near a terrorist incident, do not linger or move toward the site; leave the area immediately. Expect increased security nationwide, and more thorough scrutiny at border checkpoints and transportation hubs.
