As you would expect from an area which owes so much of its existence to the sea, the Feast of St John in Malaga involves the beaches and the sea. Its no coincidence that the feast of San Juan is held on the day of Midsummer Solstice as this is the day that countries all over Europe celebrate the longest day of the year. The roots of the Feast of San Juan can be found in the Pagan Religion but in these modern times the celebration and parties are about an excuse for a good time! The festival kicks off at midnight on the 23rd of June each year when large paper Mache caricatures are put on top of burning bonfires. You will usually be able to find these bonfires up and down the beaches of Malaga and all along the Costa de Sol. Part of the fun of the night involves jumping over and dancing around the fires. As the clocks strike midnight everyone heads for the sea where it is tradition to wash away the evil spirits and be granted eternal beauty. Although midnight is the climax of the Feast of San Juan in Malaga you will usually find the bars packed with party goers until the very late morning! You can of course experience the Feast of San Juan in any coastal town in Spain but the Festival in Malaga is one of the best. If you are staying anywhere along the Costa del Sol during this time of year then the drive to Malaga could be worth the effort. If you are staying anywhere between Fuengirola and Malaga then you may find it easier to get the train or taxi into the City Center.
