Festivals in Spain

Spain is the country of Festivals, Fiestas and Ferias. Every town and village in Spain, no metter how small or even how big, stops and celebrates the local festivals. The articles within this site provide an introduction to some of the larger ferias and festivals that are held in Spain but in total there are over 3000 festivals held heer each year.

Some fiestas are on set days each year and some take into account local issues and needs. For example many of the coastal towns and villages hold their large Ferias in the autumn after the tourist rush is over.

Three Kings Festival Malaga Spain
January 5th each year sees the celebration of Los Reyes Magos or the Three Kings and is a major event in any Spanish Childs Diary. The three king's celebration is basically a twist on Father Christmas giving the presents and to me it makes more sense. Instead of Father Christmas being the present provider it is the three kings, Melchor, Gasper and Balthazar who give the gifts.

Fiesta de San Antonio Abad Fiesta Tenerife Spain
The Fiesta of San Antonio Abad is held in January each year and the fiesta can be found in the small Tenerife Town of Arona. As with any Spanish Fiesta having fun is the key to this party and there is a good selection of activities to help keep you occupied. Even though the actual Saints Day is only on one day of the week the fiesta is celebrated over the entire week.

La Candelaria Candlemas Festival Madrid Spain
This is the celebration of the ritual purification of Mary, which, as required by Jewish law, took place forty days after the birth of her child. Candlemas is February 2. Turtledoves, doves, candles and large cakes all feature in the procession held on this day. In Alcaudete de la Jara,Toledo, a group of soldiers makes an appearance the following Sunday and parades through the streets. In Madrid the traditional heifer-run has recently seen a revival following its sharp decline or even disappearance after the Civil War.

Carnivals in Cadiz Carnival Cadiz Spain
Cadiz is a quiet and serene city on the Andalucian coast, except when it plays host to Spain's ultimate party. Cadiz is famous for the sense of humour of its citizens and Carnival is a festival in which authority, politicians, celebrities and the church are parodied and ridiculed. The central figures here are the choirs, agrupaciones, groups of between three and forty singers. The most popular type of group is the "chirigotas", choirs normally of ten unison or close-harmony singers.
