Aptly named the 'Golden Coast', the Costa Dorada?s splendid beaches of soft, clean sand and clear water enjoy sunshine all year round. Between the sea and the mountain range, there are wide open spaces with peaceful villages and fields where grapes, olives and almonds are grown. It?s an ideal place to enjoy a peaceful holiday.
Easily accessible inland are towns and places of interest, such as Valls and Vilanova and the large monasteries founded in the Middle Ages, such as those at Santes Creus and Poblet. There are rugged mountains, streams and lagoons, and picturesque spots such as Prades and Siurana. And many of the villages still have their ruined castles to explore, built centuries ago to protect them from plunder by pirates.
The Costa Dorada has a long seafaring tradition. From the arrival of the Phoenicians and then the Romans, who established important harbour bases along the coast, the sea has played an important part in the area?s history.
