
In Spain and in particular Cadiz, the Corpus Christi celebration is second only in religious and celebration terms to Semana Santa.
This festival has been observed in Spain since the 14th Century and always falls on the same date each year. The Thursday following the eighth day of Whitsun.
From the 14th Century the feast of Corpus Cristi became more and more commonplace across Spain and after originating in Girona and Barcelona the festival soon found its way into Valencia and down into the south and Andalucia.
The feast of Corpus Christi in Cadiz involves a procession in which a Holy Host isenshrined in fine silverware and brought onto the narrow streets and alleyways surrounding the Cathedral and paraded through wonderfully decorated streets.
Cadiz itself is an historic, seafaring City that can be found on Spains south coast. Unlike large parts of Spain, Cadiz is actually on the Atlantic Ocean and always has a wonderful cool breeze running across it form the Ocean.
To get to Cadiz for the Corpus Christi Celebration you need to fly into either Seville or Jerez Airport. Another alternative could be Faro Airport in Portugal which is only 2 hours away by car.
After or before the Corpus Christi festival you should try and spend time exploring the coast and countryside around Cadiz.
The whole area has avoided mass tourism and although some of the beach resorts can be built up the Costa de La Luz is a beautiful place to be and spend time in.
