In the south eastern area of Spain on the Costa Almeria, you will find the town of Garrucha. The town is also part of the large southern Region of Spain known as Andalucia.
Garrucha finds its routes in the fishing industry. In the 16th Century a group of fisherman settled here and started an industry that is still the towns driving force
Nowadays the busy fishing harbour is the main center for Garruchas activities. Fresh fish is landed here everyday and auctioned off at around 5pm with the local restaurants greedily buying up the best fish and shellfish. Garrucha is also known throughout Spain as the City of Prawns and 50% of the towns income comes from this unlikely source.
There is also a long, palm fringed promenade that runs the length of the Town and this is where you will find the main choice of restaurants and cafes. In the summer months the restaurants normally have fabulous displays of fresh fish but it is worth checking the weight of the fish you are offered before buying as many of the dishes are sold by the weight of the fish.
The best way to fly to Garrucha is by heading for either Almeria Airport or Murcia Airport. Both of these airports receive flights from a large selection of UK based low cost airlines and the main ones to checkout are Easyjet, Flybe, Ryanair and Bmibaby.
You could get taxis from the Airport into Garrucha but the transfer times are long and the journeys will be expensive.
We found that it is as cheap, if not cheaper to hire a car for your transfers and your holidays.
