Nerja is at the eastern edge of the Costa del Sol and offers different scenery and beaches to the rest of the Costa del Sol.
To get to Nerja you turn left coming out of the Airport instead of right as you do with the rest of the resort towns along the coast.
The drive from Malaga Airport to Nerja will take around 45-60 minutes and if you don?t fancy hiring a car then it is best to organize a private transfer or catch an Airport taxi rather than trying to figure out the public transport system.
Protected by the Sierra Almijara mountain range from the east, Nerja has been able to avoid the over development that has been common place throughout the rest of the Costa del Sol.
Most of the town retains its ?traditional? Spanish feel. In particular the ?Old Town? is virtually as it was 100 years ago with narrow winding streets and pretty white village houses with colorful hanging baskets.
The main tourist spot and most photographed area of Nerja is the Balcon de Europa or Balcony of Europe. Once the site of a Moorish Castle this dramatic view point juts out over the sea with incredible views over the Mediterranean Sea.
Just outside Nerja another main tourist attraction is the caves, you can find them about 3 kms outside the town centre and said to be over 20,000 years old. One of the caves doubles up as a concert hall where if you are lucky you can catch a performance during your visit.
