Menorca (Minorca) literally means ?smaller island? as opposed to its nieghbour Mallorca which means ?bigger island?.
The population of Menorca is in the region of 70,000 people and the Island in only 50 kms long and at its widest point it is only 20 kms wide.
Menorca has fantastic year long temperatures with hot, long, sunny days and mild winters. It also has a low crime rate and can easily be explored by car.
The main town on Menorca is Mahon (Mao), with a resident population of around 20,000 people Mahon is also where the Islands port and Airport can be found.
The port itself is the main hub of activity and there are plenty of places to just sit and watch the world go by whilst at night it comes alive with the restaurants and bars being the biggest draw.
In the town you will also find a smart, pedestrianized shopping area that is full of cute boutiques, leather and curio shops some thriving fish and fresh food markets.
Throughout the Island of Menorca you will find sleepy fishing villages with wonderful fish restaurants and over 120 beaches. In fact Menorca has more beaches than any other Balearic Island.
Getting to Menorca is not as easy as getting to the other Balearic Islands but British Airways, Monarch and Iberia offer quite a good selection of scheduled flights. You could also fly into Mallorca and catch a ferry across to Menorca.
Although the Island is small is still offers a lot of places and things to do and see and we would certainly recommend that you hire a car for the duration of your holiday.
