Just 70 miles off the coast off Morocco Lanzarote is the most easterly Island of all the Canary Islands. Lanzarote is the fourth largest Island of the group and is around 37 miles (60km) long and is just 12 miles (20 kms) wide at it?s widest point. With a low yearly rainfall and winter temperatures that hardly ever fall below 19C Lanzarote also enjoys good warm summers where the temperatures average around 29C in August. On the whole you will find the skyline of Lanzarote distinctly low rise in comparison to other Canary Islands and parts of Spain. Most of the Island and its development are subject to strict planning and building controls.
Parts of Lanzarote look like they belong to another planet with a large rolling volcanic landscape that has made it a favorite with many filmmakers. Planet of the Apes was made here.
Getting to Lanzarote from the UK takes roughly four hours but the clocks remain the same as the Canary Islands are on the same time as the UK throughout the year.
You can fly direct to Lanzarote with many charter airlines but if you prefer to fly here with a schedule carrier then you should look into the flights on offer from Monarch Scheduled.
With the Island being only 37 miles long you could be forgiven for thinking that hiring a car is not worth it, but there are so many things to see and so many beaches to find that we can?t imagine visiting Lanzarote and not having a car to get around.
We have found that the best supplier of hire cars in Lanzarote is Holidays.co.uk .
