Granada is one of Andalucias main Cities and is set adjacent to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the south of Spain.
The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range is Spain and Europes most southerly Ski resort which is amazing when you consider that the warm coast of the Costa Tropical is only 70 kms away.
It is even possible from November to Early March to spend the morning skiing and the afternoon lazing by the pool or on the beach!
Granada is a busy student town and the number of residents is somewhere between 250,000 and 300,000 people. Unlike many places in Spain, Granada is actually quieter over the summer months when many of the students go home and many other people head for their holidays on the cooler coast.
Granada gets fairly cool in the winter and you do get the odd frosty day. In my opinion the best time of year to visit is over the spring and autumn. During this time you get nice warm days, t shirt weather. In July and August the weather in Granada can get a little overpowering and temperatures do occasionally hit 40C.
Granadas main attraction is the Alhambra Palace, a huge hill top fortress that has been built over many centuries and has been home to many Arab Sultans. Alhambra is now a large visitor center with stunning gardens and grounds that bring in around 8,000 visitors per day.
To get to Granada you need to fly into either Granada Airport or Malaga Airport which is around a 1½ hour drive from Granada.
The only way to fully appreciate the whole area including the wonderful Sierra Nevada Mountains is by hiring a car.
