Garrucha is on the Costa Almeria on the eastern tip of Spain. Although in the Province of Almeria it is also in the Region of Andalucia.
You will find the town of Garrucha next to its larger neighbors of Vera and Mojacar. Its history dates back to around the 16th Century when the fishing industry first began here.
There is a busy fishing port in Garrucha, the second busiest on the Costa Almeria, and this is the main source of income for this lively Spanish Town.
The towns main activities basically revolve around the fishing harbour where each evening the fish that have been caught that day are auctioned off at around 5pm. Garruchas nickname is the City of Prawns and have of the money generated from all the fishing boats comes from prawns.
Most of the fish that is auctioned ends up in many of the local restaurants which are spread out along the promenade. You will find that many of the restaurants sell the fish by the kilo so it is worth asking roughly how much something weighs before asking them to cook it for you.
Apart from the harbor there is a pleasant promenade which runs for the length of the town and is lined with a good range of restaurants and cafes.
There are also many kilometers of beaches which stretch from Villaricos in the north and down to Mojacar in the south.
To fly to Garrucha you need to head for Almeria Airport or Murcia Airport. Both are a fair distance away and instead of paying for expensive airport transfers it is cheaper to hire a car.
We generally find that Car-Hire.es offer some great deals on all Spanish Car Hire.
