Formentera is the smallest, visited Island in the Balearics and has a total area of around 82 sq.kms.
As the island is so small you can?t fly direct to Formentera. You have to fly into either Ibiza or Denia on the Costa Blanca where you can get ferries across to Formentera.
You can fly to Ibiza from a large selection of airports in the UK and throughout Europe. Once at Ibiza you need to grab an airport taxi and head for the port. Here you can find a good selection of ferries and catamarans that run throughout the year and at regular intervals throughout the day over to Formentera. Depending on which boat you catch obviously determines how long the ferry journey is but they normally take between 30 and 60 minutes.
Denia is a bit of a curve ball, if you are traveling from the UK or other parts of Europe you would need to fly into Alicante, Valencia or Murcia Airports on the Costa Blanca and head to Denia to catch the ferry to Formentera. You would need to check the details with the ferry company but the boats normally only run on a Wednesday throughout the summer and the journey to Formentera will take around 4½ and 5 hours.
The decision on whether to hire a car on Formentera or just rely on local taxis and the boats that go to most of the main beaches in Formentera rests with you.
I am always of the opinion that a hire car, no matter how small the island or how short my stay, gives me the opportunity to get and see the ?real? area. On Formentera you will generally stumble across secluded and deserted beaches that other tourists simply cannot get to.
