Figueres is set in the far north eastern corner of Spain. It?s actually closer to Perpignan than to Barcelona!
Figueres most famous resident of all time is undoubtedly Salvador Dali who was born here in 1904 and opened the Dali Theater Museum in 1974. The Dali Museum has been a huge success and a massive boast to the tourist industry of Figueres. The museum is currently the third most visited museum in Spain.
Figueres is also a wonderful, buzzing Spanish Town with a large pedestrianized shopping area and vibrant Fish, Fruit and Vegetable markets which are open between 9am and 2pm on Monday, Thursday and Saturday.
To get to Figueres you have three choices of Airports:
You could fly into to Perpignan where Ryanair offer a daily service from London Stansted and then head south across the French Border and onto Figueres. Perpignan is around 65 kms from Figueres.
Girona is another Ryanair hotspot and you can fly into Girona Airport from over 23 European destinations. For those of you traveling from the UK you have the choice of flying from 7 different UK Airports. Once at Girona you have a 50 km drive to Figueres.
The last option involves a greater distance but could be of benefit if you are doing a bit of touring or the flight times and prices are right. Barcelona Airport is around 136 Kms south of Girona and has an enormous choice of flights to choose from. The road between Barcelona and Figueres is good so the journey should take less than 2 hours.
