The Costa Brava is a 200 kilometer stretch of coastline that stretches from around Barcelona all the way up to the French border and the Pyrenees Mountains.
Unlike many parts of Spain a lot of visitors from the UK or northern Europe often drive to the Costa Brava and there are several routes available.
You can either cross the channel into France and drive south or catch the ferry from Plymouth or Portsmouth to Scamander and Bilbao. The drive across northern Spain is different than the rest of Spain, far greener and hillier.
To give you an idea of distance you are looking at around 690 Kms from Bilbao to Barcelona which, according to the AA, would take around 6½ hours. The drive from Calais to Girona is 1230 kms and would take around 12 hours constant driving.
The other option is to fly into one of the Costa Brava?s Airports. You can choose from either Girona or Barcelona Airport.
Girona Airport is where Ryanair fly into from all over Europe and if you are coming from the UK you can find many charter flights that fly to this part of the Costa Brava.
On the other hand Barcelona Airport is a huge, International Airport that is very easy to get from most major European Cities and has airlines such as Easyjet and Bmibaby offering cheap, no frills flights.
The last time I traveled from the UK to the Costa Brava I flew into Barcelona Airport and drove north to just outside Girona where we were staying. I found this far easier than a 7 or 12 hour drive across country.
