 The Canary Islands are actually part of Spain but are a collection of 7 larger islands and several smaller islands that can be found in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Morocco.
The total population of all the Canary Islands combined is in the region of 900,000 people and you can find the population spread across the Islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Tenrife, La Palma, Gomera and Hierro.
The Canary Islands are also home to some of the highest peaks in Spain and Europe. The highest is Mount Teide a Volcano that peaks at an incredible 12000 ft, (3700m). On Gran Canaria you can find the mountain of Pico del Nieves which rises to 1949 meters.
The main islands all have International Airports but the biggest Airport on the Canary Islands is Tenerife Airport which deals with around 9,000,000 passengers each year. Many of these tourists arrive over the winter months when the rest of Europe is cold and wet and Tenerife offers a welcome sunny rest.
Lanzarote Airport is also very busy with around 5,500,000 visitors passing through its doors every year. The UK and Germany account for roughly 70% of all passenger traffic at Lanzarote Airport.
