Calpe is a typical Spanish Town where siestas are still in place although the area towards the rock and old fishing port are in my opinion in danger of being overdeveloped.
The huge rock, the Rock of Ifach towers over the fishing harbour at Calpe and at 332m high it has quite a presence.
You can actually climb to the summit of Ifach via internal tunnels that have been carved. Although quite a hard climb the view form the top is simply stunning.
We found Calpe to be a pleasant place to stay with an excellent selection of beaches and places to eat. On one side or the peninsula you have sandy beaches set within small coves that can have some good waves but fairly shallow water.
On the other side of the peninsula (500m) were perfect, white sandy beaches. When we got to Calpe I remember thinking that they were the best beaches that I had seen in Spain. The water was crystal clear, shallow and safe with very little waves or currents.
Backing onto the wonderful beaches are various cafes, restaurants and bars that are open throughout the day and night.
Located about 55kms north of Alicante Airport Calpe is a good place from which to explore the Costa Blanca, there is a good coastal road that runs between Calpe and Denia which is easy to drive and with some great sandy coves to stop at.
Driving to Calpe from Alicante is easy but it may be worth organizing Car Hire at the Airport as the cost of return taxis to and from Calpe could exceed the cost of Car Hire.
