Cadiz is a famous sea port that can be found jutting out into a bay in the far south western corner of Spain.
The peninsula that Cadiz stands on is almost entirely surrounded by water and was previously a bust Roman Port.
Cadiz has had a colourful history and was in previous centuries a prized possession. It has been raided through the years by the Moors and Visigoths. Sir Francis Drake even had a go and Napoleons army was defeated here in a bloody siege.
Really the most famous part of Cadizs seafaring history goes back to the 16C when Cadiz port was the launching point Christopher Columbuss voyage of discovery to America.
The City has several noteworthy landmarks such as the old Cathedral and the churches of Santa Cruz and San Felipe Neri. Some paintings by Goya can be found at La Santa Cueva and the stately mansions of Casa del Almirante and Casa de las Cadenas
The city has an airport but the easiest way of getting to Cadiz from the UK is to fly into either Seville or Jerez Airport.
You could also consider flying into Faro in Portugal or Malaga Airport both of which would involve a fairly long drive.
There are around 135,000 permanent residents in Cadiz and at night you will find most people gathering at the bars and cafes around Plaza Mina and Plaza San Francisco.
You could also try the Old Town which together with the area around Playa Victoria (Victoria Beach) comes alive over the summer months.
In our opinion the easiest way of getting to and from Cadiz and an ideal way of seeing the beautiful countryside is by having your own rental car.
Generally we find that Car-Hire.es offer the best prices on Cadiz Car Hire.
