Marinas in Spain

The seven main islands of the Canary Islands are well spaced out so that it is only a day's sail between most of them. The logical route for most yachts arriving from the north is to visit Lanzarote and Fuerteventura first before sailing to Gran Canaria, then Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma. The Canaries remain the logical jumping-off point for yachts crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean, ever since Columbus started the fashion just over 500 years ago, and from November to January the islands are full of yachts preparing for their Atlantic crossing.

Facilities for yachts have improved dramatically in recent years and more cruising yachts are now spending longer in the islands and some are permanently based there. Also on the increase is the number of yachts sailing down from Europe to spend the winter months in the Canaries' pleasant climate.

Tenerife Marinas in the Canary Islands

Tenerife is probably one of the most diverse holiday destinations you could wish for, having all the ingredients for that perfect holiday for families, singles and couples alike. The North and South of the island are quite dissimilar in style and appearance. Docking facilities in the capital of Tenerife have improved dramatically with the opening of Marina del Atlantico in the very centre of the capital Santa Cruz. Outside of Santa Cruz there are good facilities at the marinas Puerto Deportivo Radazul, Puerto Deportivo Los Gigantes and Puerto Colon.

Gran Canaria Marinas in the Canary Islands

Like a miniature continent Gran Canaria has a diverse landscape, ranging from the vast rolling sand dunes at Maspalomas, to a lush sub- tropical interior of deep ravines; banana plantations, majestic rocky slopes that give way to beautiful pine forests and breathtaking sea cliffs that are home to rare species of birds. Gran Canaria's coast has several good marinas like Puerto Deportivo de Las Palmas, Puerto Deportivo Puertorico and Puerto de Mogan. There are haul-out facilities at all of them as well as at the commercial harbour Arguineguin.

Located just 60 miles of the west coast of Africa it not only has a near perfect climate but also a distinctive North African flavour in it's architecture. On Fuerteventura there is Puerto de Morro Jable on the very south of the island, Puerto de Gran Tarajal a delightful harbour resort, and Puerto de Corralejo surrounded by sand dunes.

Lanzarote Marinas in the Canary Islands

There is no doubt Lanzarote is an island of contrasts. The general impression is that of moving back and forward in time. With the land still being farmed by roman plough to modern music festivals, rowing boats still in use for fishing to luxury yachts moored in the harbours. In short the only thing that has not changed is the hospitality of it people. One of the best marinas in the Canaries is at Puerto Calero, on Lanzarote's east coast, which has a boatyard and a range of quality, state-of-the-art services. Not far away from there lies Puerto del Carmen, a small marina at an ideal place to enjoy your vacation.

La Palma Marinas in the Canary Islands

At the Northwest of the canaries archipelago lies the island of La Palma, also known as la isla bonita or the green island, because of its exuberant forests and other extraordinary natural beauties. Like the rest of the Canary islands and the rest of the archipelagos that form La Macaronesia, La Palma's origin is volcanic. La Palma is very different from the other Canary islands in that it has lush vegetation and running streams in some of its barrancos. There are only basic facilities at Puerto de La Palma, which has good provisioning and some repair facilities, but is more than made up for in the scenery of this island.

La Gomera Marinas in the Canary Islands

The Marina La Gomera, is the first stop for travellers and proud of its history in connection with the Discovery of America. The first and most important calls were made by Christopher Columbus on his first three voyages, La Gomera being the last Castilian land that saw Columbus before the Discovery of America in 1492. Because of the important role played in the American venture, La Gomera is also known as the Isla Colombina. Members of yacht clubs can use the facilities of the Gomera Yacht Club which is reached through a short tunnel opposite the ferry tunnel.
