(Barcelona) Benjamin Franklin International School was founded in 1986 to meet the needs of the local and international community for an American curriculum school in Barcelona, Spain. Barcelona is located in the northeast corner of Spain on the Mediterranean coast. The city covers 100 square kilometers between the Mediterranean and the mountain of Tibidabo. Barcelona, dating back to the Roman times, is the only European capital with six beaches covering 4.2 kilometers of coastline. With a population of almost two million, Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain.
BFIS is an independent, co-educational non-profit college preparatory day school. Since 1986 the school offers an American curriculum from nursery through grade 12 for students of all nationalities as well as all courses necessary to obtain a Spanish high school diploma. The percentage of students from the U.S., Spain, and other countries has remained consistent since 1986 with approximately 30% American, 35% Spanish and 35% from at least 24 different countries.
The curriculum is that of U.S general academic college-preparatory schools. The Schools testing program includes the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and the Test of Academic Proficiency. The PSAT, SAT, TOEFL, and College Board Achievement Tests are available. Instruction is in English. Spanish, Catalan and French are taught as foreign languages and classes are given in Spanish language, literature and history for grades 6-12 in the Spanish language. Advanced Placement courses are offered in English, Spanish, Biology, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry; and assistance is available in the School and/or community. College counseling services and an Optimal Match Program are available for all students. ESL classes are available for grades 1-10 and SFL for grades 2-12. The School is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
The curriculum at the Benjamin Franklin International School is designed to prepare students for entrance to a college or university and reflects the latest educational methods found in the United States of America, Spain, and the world. This curriculum is revised periodically and is available for reference in the administrative offices at BFIS and in the school's library. Parents are encouraged to examine the curriculum to be better acquainted with the expectations of the school and the learning that will take place at each grade level.
