The Balearic Islands University history is short ? since 1978 ? but can be considered long as far as its precedents are concerned. If we take a look at its historic background, four great stages can be established: the Escoles Lul.lianes in the XV century, under private patronage; the Estudi General Lul.lià, created by Ferran el Catòlic in 1483; the Universitat Literària, from 1698 to 1829; and the relaunching of the Estudi General from 1951 which finally, in 1978, became the Universitat de les Illes Balears. Each stage is marked by the concerns peculiar to their age: the prestige of the work of Ramon Llull, the spirit of the Counter-Reformation and the adaptation to the challenges of current knowledge and technology.
However, the present university is not rooted so much in tradition as in the change in the economic, social and political context over the last 30 years. The political context is determined by the democratic constitution of 1978, by the development of social policies of education and equality between sexes, and by the economic development of the Balearic Islands. The economic structure of the islands, in the world of tourism, has sculpted the actual island university model. What is of interest is the world of enterprise, the management of information, the environment and the historic values involved.
The success of the university?s adaptation to its cultural and economic surroundings is quite evident: 15,000 students are enrolled in 36 courses taught at the UIB. Yet the university must not sit back and congratulate itself on what has already been achieved; if nowadays the only permanent thing is change, the university can only continue fulfilling its role while it carries on posing permanent demands on knowledge and quality, on the way in which it relates to society and on being aware of its needs.
The desire of the UIB to be at the cutting edge can be seen in its initiatives that are aimed at watching over its future, with its Strategic Plan for Quality; with the Forward Planning Office; specialization and job placement, with the University-Enterprise Foundation; and innovation, through the Parc Bit which is linked to the Regional Government of the Balearic Islands. With all of this, the UIB cannot guarantee to control the future changes, but the changes, when they do happen, will not take it by surprise.
