Almería is located in the very south of Spain and the university itself is situated right on the coast and is graced with good weather all year round. Given the loaction of Almería, it has many varying landscapes which range from coast to mountainous areas and desert. The region has a rich cultural heritage due to its ancient history which first saw the Phoenicians settle there, followed by the Greeks. The name of Almería stems from Al-miraya, mirror of the sea, and was first founded by Abd-Al Rahman III as a principal harbour in his extensive empire. Its spanish roots come from its surrender to the Catholic Kings, Ferdinand and Isabella in 1489 and was incorporated into the Kingdom of Granada.
The University of Almería is a public university which was founded by the Parliament of Andalusia in 1993 and so in this sense it is a relatively new university that was primariry established to enhance the city as an historical, cultural and educational centre.Currently 29 degrees are available at the University of Almería, counting with 681 professors and 15.020 students. The university campus is to be found 7 km out of Almería on the main road that leads to the Nature Parc of Cabo de Gata-Nijar.
The University has all types of facilities available and beside the usual, it has coffee shops, a university restaurant, indoor and outdoor sport facilities and a student union. It also prides itself on establishing a great number of clubs for students to join to maximise their enjoyment of the student experience.
Students may spend one semester of their second year completing a number of credits as part of Part B of the English degree. This is a 'Socrates' programme. For students who have studied Spanish at A Level or AS Level and/or in some circumstances GCSE Level, this is an ideal way of broadening your cultural education and developing your linguistic skills. While a knowledge of Spanish is obviously preferable, in certain circumstances other students will be considered.
The University was once part of the University of Granada but achieved its independence around 10 years ago. It is situated immediately beside the sea with new buildings on a modern and architecturally exciting campus. In the year 2005, it is to serve as the host to the Mediterranean Games.
