Vilanova

Vilanova is the capital of El Garraf, a region which lies half-way between the main metropolitan areas of Barcelona (40 kms to the North), and Tarragona (45 kms to the South), and covers a total area of 33.5 km2. Its population is 51,683 inhabitants according to the official census in 1998. Its rich history dates back many centuries; in 1274 it was awarded the Carta Pobla (City Charter)by King Jaume I.

As a city, it has polarized the attention of a great area even beyond its own boundaries, and has always boasted a dynamic economy, originally based on its agriculture and wine shipping commerce (in the 18th and 19th centuries), and later on, its textile industry. In recent years industry has diversified, with the presence of large metal, chemical and textile factories (since the first half of the 20th century). The city still maintains a certain amount of agricultural commerce and one of the most important fishing fleets in Catalonia. There has also been an important development in the sector of tourism and leisure facilities.

Vilanova i la Geltrú has a complex for water sports within the port, beaches, seafront promenade, golf course. There are wide number of cultural activities, including nationally important museums such as The Victor Balaguer (romantic Catalanonian art), or technology, The Railway Museum, as well as an annual programme of theatre, music and cinema, music festivals such as the FIMPT (International Popular and Traditional Music Festival).
Vilanova i la Geltrú has one of the most intense calendars of traditional celebrations in Catalonia, especially Els Tres Tombs, Carnival and Festa Major.

In a city with such a tradition of agriculture and fishing, its cooking, based on fresh produce, is very important and widely acknowledged.

There is a Museum located in the historic steam locomotive depot of Vilanova i la Geltrú. It tries to show in an innovative and active way the universe of trains and their extremely important role in the  contemporary world.
In its facilities the Museum proposes a suggestive trip from its origins to the XXI century. In its outstanding location from the XIX century the most important collection of steam locomotives in Europe is on display. A spectacular engine shed houses all-time vehicles and railway elements.  In the inside area one can find several objects and services, and a room where to see the awarded audiovisual   Don't  Miss the History Train.
The Railway Museum of Vilanova i la Geltrú is integrated in the System of the Science and Technique Museums of the Generalitat de Catalunya as a collaborating entity.
